I spent six months solo traveling across Mexico, fully embracing the digital nomad lifestyle. This transformative experience was packed with unforgettable moments that reshaped how I navigate life. Becoming a digital nomad empowered me to take control and design my own story. If you’re curious about starting your digital nomad journey, I’m here to share my experiences and provide valuable insights on accommodation, cuisine, and the best (and not-so-great) activities in Mexico. Explore my journey and discover how to thrive as a digital nomad.
This post will focus on my time in Mexico City. I will have separate posts for the different areas I’ve travelled around the country to keep all content organized and quickly accessible.
Mexico City
My journey kicked off in February 2022 when I arrived in Mexico City. On my birthday, I booked a day trip to the hot springs in Tolantongo and connected with fellow adventurers, turning it into the most unforgettable birthday celebration I’ve ever had.
Activities:
- Full-Day Tour Exploring the Waters of Tolantongo
- Balloon flight with pick up in CDMX + Breakfast in a natural cave
- Teotihuacan, Guadalupe Shrine, Tlatelolco & Tequila Tasting
Accommodations:
- Airbnb
- Hostelworld – Selina
Dining:
- Nudo Negro $$$
- Lucerna Comedor $
I loved staying at hostels during my travels because they offer a great opportunity to meet fellow travelers. I had an excellent experience at several Selina locations, with one exception—the Cancun location. The co-ed room I was assigned was unbearable due to unclean conditions and unpleasant smells from some of the male guests. Unable to tolerate the filth, I quickly booked a stay at a different hostel. While these situations can happen, as guests are responsible for their own cleanliness, it’s important to remember that there are plenty of alternative accommodations available if you’re not satisfied with your stay.
My favorite area for exploring was Roma Norte, a trendy neighborhood known for its hipster vibe and bustling community of young professionals. I was captivated by the stunning 19th-century neo-colonial architecture as I wandered through the vibrant streets of Roma Norte.
As I reflect on my incredible journey as a Black woman digital nomad living in Mexico, I’m reminded of the many unforgettable experiences, from exploring the vibrant streets of Roma Norte to embracing the unique opportunities that hostel life offers. While there were challenges along the way, such as navigating less-than-ideal accommodations, each experience added to the richness of my adventure. My time in Mexico not only allowed me to connect with like-minded travelers but also solidified my belief in the power of crafting your own story. Whether you’re dreaming of becoming a digital nomad or simply seeking inspiration for your next travel destination, I hope my journey encourages you to take the leap and create your own unforgettable memories.
Stay well my beautiful friends and sisters, speak to you again soon.
